How do I fall asleep without alcohol?

A bit of weight in your bedding, cool versus heat. Do they help you?

For years I told myself that I need alcohol to fall asleep. Letting go of that belief meant trusting that I could learn to sleep in a different way, and finding another way to support my body to rest.

That belief shift began with preparing myself for sleep through a simple nighttime routine.

The first few weeks after stopping drinking were hard and sleep didn’t come easily.

What helped me most was using a meditation app. It gave me mind something gentle to focus on and helped me settle. Sleep didn’t happen straight away, sometimes it took half an hour, other nights much longer, but I trusted the process.

I also made sure that I didn’t eat 2-3hrs before bed.

I kept my pantry stocked with Herbal teas my favourites Camomile, peppermint and Twinning’s slept tea.

Even a glass of warm milk helped.

Now that I am 3 years alcohol-free I love the thought of sleep. Without alcohol running through my body I don’t force sleep comes naturally.

I genuinely love sleep now, and over the last few years I’ve experienced deep, restorative rest that I hadn’t felt in a very long time.

And I want this for you.

Here is a small checklist that may help.

  1. Prepare for sleep - create your own nighttime routine.

  2. Remove technology before bed.

  3. Have a warm drink non-caffeinated ready.

  4. Try a meditation app (I use Happier Meditation)

  5. Eat no less than 2hours before bedtime.
