Science - Alcohol vs Sleep
Quality sleep isn’t just about how long you’re in bed.
It’s about what happens while you’re there.
Sleep is when your body restores itself.
Alcohol interrupts that process.
While alcohol might help you fall asleep faster, it disrupts the natural sleep cycle, particularly REM sleep, the stage responsible for dreaming, memory, emotional regulation, mental clarity.
This is why so many women experience the familiar 3-4am wake up.
The moment when:
Your mind suddenly switches on
Anxiety creeps in
You feel wired but exhausted
This usually happens as the alcohol wears off, right when your body should be entering its most restorative sleep phase.
When I stopped drinking, sleep didn’t magically improve overnight.
The first few weeks were uncomfortable restless nights, a busy mind, learning how to fall asleep without alcohol.
What helped was supporting my body instead of forcing sleep.
And slowly, gently my body remembered how to sleep on its own.
Now, alcohol-free, I don’t chase sleep or force it.
It comes naturally.
If alcohol was no longer part of your evenings, what could your body do with real rest again.
